The National Society of Paintings and Crafts is organizing an exhibition of paintings, block prints, sculpture, crafts and photos. It’s the biggest annual art exhibition in Japan, and held every spring.

The exhibition covers all forms of arts and crafts, including pottery.

Ceramicist Kenkichi Tomimoto created the National Society of Paintings and Crafts Club, and many contemporary artists joined the club. In order to advance the arts and crafts in the country, the club created an annual nationwide exhibition. Some members also came to Okinawa to see Okinawa’s beautiful traditional arts and crafts, and were duly impressed. After the visit, members started regular contact with artists in Okinawa.

This year is the 90th anniversary of the exhibition, and the first time it’s held in Okinawa. The exhibition is taking place at Okinawa Prefecture Museum and Art Museum in Omoromachi, Naha, through Oct. 2nd. The museum is open from 9:00 to 18:00 with the last admission 30 minutes before closing time. The museum is closed every Monday, except on Sep. 19th that is a Japanese national holiday.

Admission is ¥1,200 for adults and ¥500 for elementary through high school students at door. Preschool age and younger children can enter free.
