Yomitan Yachimun Pottery Market is worth weekend visit
The annual Yomitan Yachimun Pottery Market gathers pottery and glass artisans from the Yomitan area to display their wares for a sale at this weekend, Oct. 15-16, at Gala Aoiumi facility in Yomitan.
The two-day market features ceramics and glass from more than two-dozen makers where all products are sold at a discount price.
Over the years the market has gained a reputation of being a good chance to discover a treasure, and meet a variety of skilled pottery makers and glass artists in person.
The products for sale are dishes meant for daily use, traditional art craftworks and shisa.
Yomitan is famous for its numerous active kilns. After the war, pottery makers from Naha’s Tsubogawa district that had been completely destroyed in the war moved to Yomitan, and re-started their businesses.
In addition to the two-day sale that is open from 10:00 to 19:00 on both days, there’s a charity auction on Sunday that starts at 16:00.
Browsing through the pottery and glasswares could make one hungry. A restaurant called Kisama in Gala Aoiumi serves delicious meals from hand-made Yachimun vessels. There’s also a pizzeria, salt factory that organizes workshops and an ice cream parlor within the same facility.
Admission to the event is free and free parking is available.
Gala Aoi-Umi is located at 915, Takashiho, Yomitan Village. They also have an English language homepage.
To get to Gala Aoiumi drive north on Hwy 58. Turn left on Route 6 and continue past Torii Station. Follow signs to Nikko Alivila, drive past the main entrance and the wedding chapel next to the hotel. Gaia Aoiumi is 300 meters south.
