12-year-old driver DUI in fatal motorbike crash

Investigators have determined that a 12-year-old boy was the driver in a motorcycle crash that occurred on Feb. 12th on Highway 58 in Yamada, Onna Village, in which a 15-year-old boy was killed and a 14-year-old girl suffered a broken collarbone.

They also say that the underage driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. The other two children who were riding o0n the same motorcycle tested negative for alcohol.

Ishikawa Police has turned the 12-year old boy over to the Prefectural Central Child Consultation Center on suspicion of driving under the influence, but he will not be prosecuted because he is under 14 of age. Under he Japanese Juvenile Law, children under 14 are not subject to punishment, and his name is withheld because he is a minor. Reportedly, the boy has admitted to the charges.
