Huge number of fish dead at Comprehensive Park pond
A huge number of carp and tilapia were found dead in the pond of Okinawa Comprehensive Athletic Park, Wednesday.
According to the park office, the dead fish numbered more than 1,000. Officials suspect that the main factors contributing to the mass death are elevated water temperature and deterioration of water quality because of the ongoing heat wave.
Park office personnel noticed many dead carps floating on the pond about 6 a.m. Wednesday. Reportedly, the dead fish amounted to five truckloads.
A representative of the park says, “Tilapia did not originally exist in this pond, but they have grown causing oxygen deficiency. This summer’s heat wave has increased the risk of massive death of fish.”
Park officials plan to add salt to the pond to improve the water quality.
