Construction at Miyako’s Shimoji Airport starts
Mitsubishi Estate Co., Ltd held a ceremony Wednesday to pray for the safety of the construction of the Shimoji Airport Terminal scheduled to open March 2019. Junichi Tanizawa, a Mitsubishi Estate senior executive officer and representatives of Nikkei Sekkei and Kokubagumi Construction Co. attended the ceremony.
Shimoji Airport is expected to have flights from Taipei, Hong Kong, Seoul, and Shanghai, in addition to LCC flights from Narita, Kansai, and Chubu airports. The aim is to have 55,000 passengers in the first year.
The flight routes to the airport are distinct from the nearby Miyako Airport. Each flight route starts with one per day, to be increased to four a day on the international routes. Private jets of wealthy people are also expected to use the airport.
The airport terminal will be built on a site of 31,580 square meters, and the floor area of the facility will be 13,840 square meters. The airport will maintain its former function of a training area for pilots.
Tanizawa said, “We would like to contribute to the development of Miyako, together with the existing airport.”
