Because of typhoon Lan last weekend, supply ferries have not been able to enter Minami and Kita Daito Islands since Oct. 15th that has caused food shortages on the two islands.

A plan to resume the ferry service on Saturday was cancelled because of the approaching typhoon Saola that is forecast to reach the area this weekend. Ferry operators now say it looks like there will be no ferry service before the end of the month.

Bread, milk, tofu, and eggs have been delivered by air, but all these products are sold out as soon as they arrive at stores on the islands.

According to Kita Daito Village Office, some stores are restricting shoppers to two packs of instant ramen per person. Reportedly, people cooperate with each other sharing their food.
