Hilton plans to have two hotels on Sesoko Island

Mori Trust Co, Ltd., a real estate developer in Tokyo, announced Monday that it’s going to build two hotels on Sesoko Island off Motobu in cooperation with the Hilton Hotels group.

One of the hotels, tentatively named “Hilton Okinawa Sesoko Resort” will have 300 rooms and open in 2020. The second is a time-share type resort hotel for members only with 132 rooms opening in 2021. Mori Trust Co, Ltd. owns a 335,131-squaremeter lot of land on Sesoko, on which the new hotels will be built.

The time-share resort hotel will be the first project in Asia by Hilton Grand Vacations. Mori Trust will build the 10-story hotel building with a total floor space of 15,000 square meters. Hilton Hotels will manage the property. Customers are offered part ownership of a unit with kitchen, living and bedroom that they can use on weekly basis. Most of the customers are expected to have long stays.

Reportedly, Hilton Grand Vacations has 56,000 Japanese members who can use the time-share resort.

Mark Wang, the Hilton Grand Vacations president, says, “The most requested service from our members was to have a property in Okinawa. We expect about 80% of our customers would be Japanese.”

The “Hilton Okinawa Sesoko Resort” will be managed by Hilton. The building will be 9 stories high with a total floor space of 21,000 square meters, and include spa, indoor swimming pool, chapel, and meeting rooms.

The total site area of the hotel is 133,791 square meters. The construction on both properties will start in 2018.

Miwako Date, the president of Mori Trust, says, “The number of tourists in Okinawa is almost same as in Hawaii, however there is a big difference in income for the local economy.” She points out that one way to increase the income is by building long-stay facilities.
