Okinawan wins karate kata championship with traditional Karate

Akihiro Yagi, the 39-year-old deputy director of Okinawa Dento Karatedou Kobudou Kokusai Kensyu Center (Okinawa traditional Karatedo Kobudo International Research Center), the Headquarters of International Meibukan Gojyuryu Karatedo Association, visited Okinawa Governor Takeshi Onaga in the Prefectural Office to report his championship at the World Traditional Karatedo Championships in Italy, Oct. 26 to 29.

The competition had about 5,000 participants from 107 countries all over the world. In addition to Karate, the games also included mixed martial arts and Tae Kwon Do.

Yagi took part in the Kata competition for the first time. However, entering the competition h had his doubts. “All judges were foreigners and I was not sure how they would judge, but I’m from Okinawa, the birthplace of Karate, so I just performed the traditional Karate,” he said. Obviously, that was exactly what was required, as he won the championship.

Yagi was pleased that he was able to prove that traditional Okinawan Karate is valued worldwide.
