A man jaywalking on Highway 58 died when he was run over by two cars early Friday morning on Highway 58 in Mihama, Chatan Town.

According to Okinawa City Police, 61-year-old Tsutomu Shimabukuro was walking on the street about 2 a.m. when he was knocked down and by a car running northbound on the highway. The car behind also ran over Shimabukuro who was taken to a hospital where he died about 45 minutes later.

The site is a straight road with no pedestrian crossings. Police say the driver whose car hit Shimabukuro first said, “I did not realize someone was walking in the middle of the street before hitting with him.”

Police are investigating the reason why Shimabukuro was jaywalking in the middle of the street.
